Digital talk show is a concept where I get to interview some of the most influential names in the Digital Marketing field to get their insights on some of the most sought out answers. And this week, I got the chance to pick up the mind of Rajiv Dingra, Founder and CEO, WATConsult.
In this candid conversation, he explains how he started his journey, tips on running a successful digital marketing agency and what his alternate career would’ve been.
Here are the 3 key takeaways from the interview:
#1 Why attitude matters?
‘Attitude eats aptitude for lunch. By virtue of hiring young people and people with lesser experience over the last 12 years, especially in the first 5-6 years of our journey, I realized that attitude is everything. Aptitude can be built. People can learn on the job, people can learn the skill, they can work hard and improve their knowledge, but they can’t improve their attitude. At least, not until they have had a life-changing moment or a realization that their attitude is wrong. You can’t teach someone a great attitude. You can guide, but not teach’
#2 On winning Clients
‘While trying to win a client, stick to what you know. Don’t try and offer too much, and at the same time try and make sure you are fulfilling the need of the client.’
#3 Why ‘Vision’ is important for the long run?
‘It is very important for any entrepreneur, and not just agency owners, to have a very clear vision. If you are not sure where you are headed, your people are going to know that sooner or later, and very quickly. So, make sure you have a clear vision of what your agency is going to be about. Not every agency needs to be 350-400 people. I know of boutique agencies in the world, which do fabulous work, which is not that large but their worth gets awarded in global festivals. So, scaling up should be done only if there is a requirement and not just to show great numbers. Focus on building your business, then see if the great business can be scaled up to still remain great and be at a larger scale.’
The valuable perspective on the topic revolved around entrepreneurship which included tried and tested methods and the story of his journey to build a million-dollar agency. He answered questions like, ‘How big is your team at WATConsult? And what is your revenue?’, ‘How do you win businesses?’, ‘For agencies to be acquired, what are the 3 things that you recommend?’. This was followed by a really fun round of rapid fire.
