1. Marketing foundations: start with the business problem
Learn to identify an audience, a specific need and an offer before choosing channels. A campaign for a local service business has different economics from a repeat-purchase product. You should be able to explain what success means and what action the audience needs to take.
Suggested assignment: write a one-page brief covering the customer, problem, offer, objections, budget constraint and success measure. A reviewer should be able to identify missing assumptions without needing to read twenty slides.
2. Websites and landing pages: build something usable
Cover domain and hosting basics, a content management system such as WordPress, page structure, accessible images, mobile layout and form testing. Connect the promise in an ad to the information on its destination page. Include basic troubleshooting rather than stopping when a template looks attractive.
Suggested assignment: publish a clearly labelled practice page, test the enquiry path and document mobile checks. Review the message, page speed and usability. Use test data and obtain permission before connecting a real business account.
3. SEO: research, publish and check discovery
An SEO module should cover intent research, titles, headings, internal links, canonical URLs, robots directives, XML sitemaps and Search Console. Students should distinguish a page being crawlable, indexed and ranked. They should also learn when a technical change is unnecessary or could cause a problem.
Suggested assignment: map a small topic cluster, improve one existing page and record what changed. Cite factual sources and check the public result. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a useful primary reference. Avoid promises that a checklist score or a repeated keyword will secure a ranking.
4. AEO and GEO: make answers clear and supportable
Answer Engine Optimisation and Generative Engine Optimisation concern how information is understood and surfaced in answer-based and AI-assisted search experiences. The practical foundation is useful content that clearly identifies its subject, answers the reader’s question and supports factual claims.
Google says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode; no special additional technical requirement is needed for inclusion. Read its guidance on AI features and websites. A course should teach accurate visible content and appropriate structured data, not a promise that adding FAQ markup will secure an AI citation.
Suggested assignment: answer a specific buying question with a direct summary, a useful comparison and dated sources. Record any actual search observations separately from what you hope will happen.
5. Google Ads: connect spend to a defined result
Cover account and campaign structure, keyword intent, ads and assets, landing-page relevance, budgets, conversion setup and performance analysis. Students should understand how automation depends on the objective and signals supplied to it. Naming campaign types is not enough.
Suggested assignment: prepare a search campaign for a supplied brief, with keywords, exclusions, messages and a measurement plan. Explain why the plan fits the budget. If live spend is involved, agree permissions and limits before launch. Use Google Skillshop for official platform training and check the current certification requirements.
6. Meta Ads: build a creative testing discipline
Teach campaign objectives, the conversion path, creative strategy, audience choices and measurement. Include the relationship between platform reports and the business’s actual enquiries or sales. Students should learn to diagnose a weak message or poor landing page rather than attributing every problem to targeting.
Suggested assignment: create three ad concepts based on different customer objections. Define what stays constant, what changes and what evidence would justify the next iteration. Document the creative reasoning as well as the campaign setup.
7. Social media, content and video
Cover audience research, content themes, scripts, production basics, editing, distribution and community responses. Choose platforms because they suit the audience and business, not because every brand supposedly needs to post everywhere. Teach students to use licensed or authorised assets and to distinguish an observation from a growth claim.
Suggested assignment: build a two-week content plan and produce a short video, a carousel and one written post from the same brief. Explain how each format changes the message. Review clarity, usefulness and the intended next action.
8. Email, CRM and retention
Include permission-based list building, segmentation, customer journeys, message relevance, unsubscribe handling and the basics of deliverability. Connect email or messaging to a useful purpose, such as answering an enquiry or helping an existing customer. A workflow should have a clear stop condition.
Suggested assignment: map a three-message follow-up sequence for people who requested information. Describe the trigger, audience, message and exit rule. Test with dummy contacts rather than importing a private customer list into unfamiliar tools.
9. Analytics: learn to question the report
Teach GA4 events and key events, campaign tagging, conversion definitions, basic reporting and attribution limits. A form submission and a qualified lead are not the same business event. Students need to understand what a dashboard measures and what it leaves out.
Google’s key event setup tutorial explains how an important event can be marked as a key event. The classroom task should then connect that technical setup to the business definition of success.
Suggested assignment: create a measurement plan and diagnose a report containing duplicate form events or missing campaign tags. Recommend the next check instead of inventing certainty from incomplete data.
10. AI and agentic workflows: work with checks and limits
An AI module should cover prompting, source context, tokens, context windows, tool permissions, usage costs and evaluation. Students should learn when to use a model, what information it needs and what a human must verify. Agentic workflows add the ability to use tools or take actions, which makes clear permissions and review especially important.
Suggested assignment: give an AI assistant a source pack and ask it to draft a campaign brief. Record factual errors, missing context and useful suggestions. Then build a simple sequence that prepares an output for review without publishing or spending money automatically.
A stronger project includes test cases: conflicting fees, an outdated source or a missing claim. The student should show how the workflow handles the problem. Speed matters only after the output meets the task’s quality requirements.
11. E-commerce and commercial thinking
Teach product information, the purchase journey, fulfilment constraints, repeat purchases and contribution margin. Introduce customer acquisition cost and return on ad spend with their limitations. Revenue alone does not establish profit, and an attributed sale does not automatically establish incremental growth.
Suggested assignment: compare two campaign ideas using a supplied product margin and budget. State assumptions about returns, repeat purchases and attribution. For affiliate content, discuss clear disclosures and useful evaluation rather than treating links as an automatic income source.
12. Portfolio, reporting and client communication
Students should practise explaining a brief, agreeing scope, presenting work and responding to criticism. A portfolio needs to separate personal contribution, team work and templates. Client or student data should only appear with permission and appropriate redaction.
Suggested assignment: present the capstone in ten minutes. Explain the problem, choices, limitations and next experiment. A reviewer should ask why each decision was made, not only whether the slides look professional.

Here is a proposed capstone for comparing course quality: create a marketing plan for a fictional neighbourhood bakery. Produce an audience brief, a landing page, an SEO page outline, three ad concepts, a consent-aware follow-up sequence and a measurement plan. Use simulated data that is labelled as such. This is an example assessment, not a published student outcome.
